Independence Day or National day essentially commemorates a very significant day in the history of a country's struggle in the attainment of its freedom.

Australia Day is celebrated as Australia's official National Day on the 26 January. Formerly known as the Foundation day, Australia day marks the landing of the First Fleet on 26 January 1788 under Captain Arthur Phillip when he became the first governor after gaining sovereignty over the colony of New South Wales.

On this day every Australian unites as a nation and re-commits to making Australia an even more beautiful place to live in.

Today Australia Day is celebrated as a community day. The formal celebrations begin on the eve of Australia Day and continue all through the next day. The ceremony is marked by flag hoisting, community awards presentation and citizenship ceremonies along with local events, breakfasts, and merrymaking. Parades and fireworks are also a common feature in the national day celebrations of Australia. The most popular site of concerts, festivities and lightshows are the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra the Capital city of Australia.

In recent times numerous communities are recognizing the significance of Australia Day for the indigenous or the Aboriginals of Australia with events like indigenous flag hoisting and other ceremonies.
