Today Australia Day is celebrated as a community day. The formal celebrations begin on the eve of Australia Day and continue all through the next day. The ceremony is marked by flag hoisting, community awards presentation and citizenship ceremonies along with local events, breakfasts, and merrymaking. Parades and fireworks are also a common feature in the national day celebrations of Australia. The most popular site of concerts, festivities and lightshows are the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra the Capital city of Australia.

In recent times numerous communities are recognizing the significance of Australia Day for the indigenous or the Aboriginals of Australia with events like indigenous flag hoisting and other ceremonies.
