1. Francisco de Paula Santander---
Francisco de Paula Santander was born on April 2, 1792 and played a great role in Columbia's struggle for independence. Before beginning his career in military at the tender age of 18, he was pursuing his studies in law. He joined as a federalist but later joined in the rank of Colonel in 1812. Under the aegis of Simón Bolívar, Santander was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in 1817. In October 1821, after the formation of the constitution of Cúcuta Santander was vehemently elected as the vice president of Gran Columbia. During his tenure as the vice president, he had to face a lot of political and economic pressures. Also in the later part, his differences with Simon Bolivar had to undergo a series of crises for a considerable period of time. His return from exile in 1832 made him the President of New Granada which continued till 1836. He eventually died in 1840 after the end of his tenure.
2. Jorge Eliécer Gaitán---
Jorge Eliécer Gaitán came from a humble background, born on January 23, 1903 and had to face a lot of hard ships at the tender age. In spite of the hardships, he attained his law degree and later he joined as a professor in the National University of Columbia. His political career began in early 1919 under the able leadership of Marco Fidel Suárez. In 1933 he formed his own political party the "Unión Izquierdista Revolucionaria" ("Leftist Revolutionary Union"), or symbolically known as U.N.I.R. Later in 1935, he again joined the Liberal Party and was formally elected as the Mayor of Bogota. During his political career, he achieved new heights of success at the same time was also shrouded by controversaries. His assassination on April 9, 1948 marked the end of his life, though the real cause behind his untimely death needs to be ascertained.
3. Andrés Pastrana Arango---
Born in August 17, 1954, Andrés Pastrana Arango followed in the steps of his father Misael Pastrana Borrero. He completed his education from U.S.A and later worked in a television and print media, founded by him for a considerable period of time. As a journalist, he tried to focus on the burning issues of Columbia such as trafficking of cocaine, drug peddling etc, which brought him both national and international accolades. In 1994 he contested for the post of Presidency against Ernesto Samper, which he lost by a very narrow margin, finally in 1998 he, won the seat and was sworn in as the President of Columbia . His tenure ended on 2002 and during this phase he took great initiatives for the development of the country.
Thus, these national heroes of Columbia have truly transformed the national identity of the country and worked towards its upliftment.
