National Flag of Ghana

123Independenceday » Ghana » National Flag

The present national flag of Ghana was officially hoisted on 6th March, 1957, after Ghana's attainment of independence in 1957 from the United Kingdom. Before that a different flag existed which was replaced and this new national flag of Ghana introduced.

Description:

The Ghanaian national flag was designed by Mrs. Theodosia Salome Okoh to replace the flag of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland after its independence. The national flag Ghana uses the Pan-African colors of Ethiopia with a star in the middle for being the first independent African nation of the 20th century. Ghana's national flag consists of the color red, golden yellow and green in three equal horizontal stripes with a five-pointed black star in the centre of the golden yellow stripe. The Ghanaian flag is similar to the flag of Bolivia, which has a coat of arms centered in the golden yellow band. It was the first African flag after the flag of Ethiopia to feature these colors.

The color Red of the national flag of Ghana represents the blood of those who died in the nation's struggle for independence, the Golden Yellow stands for the country's mineral wealth, the Green symbolizes the country's rich forest and the Black star stands for the lone star of African freedom.

This current Ghanaian national flag was replaced shortly between 1st January, 1964 to 28th February, 1966 where the middle strip was white in color. The concept of the black star came from the flag of the Black Star Line, a shipping line incorporated by Marcus Garvey that operated from 1919 to 1922. Representing the African freedom, it became a part of the country's national symbols. The flag was green in color with a red saltire and a large black star in the centre. This star also gives Ghana its national football team's nickname, the Black Stars.

There is a great deal of protocol involved while displaying Ghana's national flag. Some regulations need to be followed while hoisting the national flag of Ghana.

  • The Ghanaian national flag should never be flown upside down except as a distress signal.
  • When the national flag of Ghana is displayed together with any other flags, it must be hoisted first and lowered last.
  • Ghana's national flag must be at the top when displayed together with any other flags on the same flagstaff.
  • The Ghanaian national flag will always have to be given priority when flown with other Indonesian flags like the State Flag or the Military Flag.
